We refreshed our data on all six sourcing groups with recent (2023–2024) figures. This is the one-page index — each group links to its full note with sources. The pattern across the board: Vietnam has moved from "cheaper alternative" to genuine top-tier supplier in several categories, with spare capacity in others that works in a buyer's favour.

The scorecard

Engineered quartz — world top-3 exporter. ~2,773 shipments (Nov 2023–Oct 2024, +72% YoY); Vicostone alone >3.5M m²/year; US-dominated, with US duty rates the key variable. → Full data note

Wood & plywood — the export giant. ~US$16.25 billion timber-product exports in 2024 (record); plywood ~3.35M m³ / ~US$1.03B; US the dominant market. Origin & legality docs are the risk. → Full data note

Porcelain / ceramic tile — capacity surplus. 800M+ m²/year capacity vs ~397M m² produced in 2023; Viglacera in the world's top-20; ~US$674M ceramic exports in 2024 (+9%). Spare capacity = leverage. → Full data note

Sanitary ware — ASEAN's #1. ~Half of ASEAN output; Viglacera ~2M units/year; TOTO, LIXIL and Caesar manufacture locally. Brand-grade quality is available — specify to the rating. → Full data note

Aluminium & glass — scaling fast. Aluminium ~1.5M tonnes / ~US$4.2B in 2024 (+14.5%); glass tracking ~US$1.5B; some plants at 30–40% utilization. Buy systems and test reports, not kilos. → Full data note

Fiber cement — real, but opaque. No reliable national capacity figure; verify at the exporter level. Our own DURAGREEN® line and peers export actively. → Full data note

The two themes a buyer should take away

  1. Trade position is now a feature. In quartz, tile and wood, Vietnamese origin sidesteps the US anti-dumping / Section 301 exposure that Chinese shipments carry — but only if origin is genuinely verifiable. That verification is worth more than a small price difference.
  2. Capacity headroom is leverage. Where Vietnam runs below capacity (tile, parts of aluminium), factories want committed export orders — use it on price, lead time and overage.
