Wood is Vietnam's largest export category by a distance — $17.2 billion of wood and wood products in 2025, with plywood alone over $1.8 billion in 2024 and the country among Asia's top three plywood exporters. It is also the group where the "top 5 manufacturers" question has the least satisfying answer, and being straight about why is more useful than a tidy list.

Why this list is structured differently

Two problems with ranking Vietnamese wood producers:

The sector is genuinely fragmented. Unlike tile (a handful of large producers) or quartz (one listed leader), Vietnamese plywood is made across hundreds of mills clustered in Binh Duong, Bac Giang and the Red River Delta. No single exporter dominates. A "top 5 plywood exporters" claim is mostly an artefact of whoever compiled it.

Most of the lists are self-published. Search "top 10 plywood exporters in Vietnam" and the results are overwhelmingly published by Vietnamese plywood exporters — companies ranking themselves and their peers. That is marketing, and we are not going to launder it by repeating it.

So this list separates what is verifiable (listed groups with published accounts) from what is structurally true (a fragmented plywood base you have to evaluate mill by mill).

As with our other market lists, this is a public market landscape, not our supplier list — inclusion is neither an endorsement nor an indication of any commercial relationship.

The verifiable names: Vietnam's listed wood groups

1. Phu Tai JSC (HOSE: PTB) — the largest listed wood group. Reported consolidated revenue of about VND 6,466 billion in 2024, up 15% on 2023. Phu Tai spans wood products and stone, so it is a diversified group rather than a pure wood play — but it is the biggest publicly reporting name in the sector and the easiest to verify.

2. An Cuong Wood-Working JSC (HOSE: ACG) — panels and interior surfaces. Net revenue of approximately VND 3,762 billion in 2024, down from about VND 4,475 billion in 2023 — a reminder that even the listed leaders felt the furniture-demand cycle. An Cuong's strength is engineered panels, laminates and interior wood surfaces rather than structural plywood.

3. Duc Thanh Wood Processing JSC (HOSE: GDT) — the smaller listed specialist. About VND 365 billion in 2024 revenue, up 18% — much smaller than the two above, and focused on household and finished wood products. Included because it is publicly reporting and therefore checkable.

4 and 5: the honest answer

4. The plywood mill base — evaluated individually, not ranked. Vietnam's film-faced, MDO, HDO and formwork plywood export capacity sits across a large number of mid-size mills producing to EN and KS Tego ranges. Several are capable and export-experienced. None has published, audited evidence that would justify us naming it above its peers, so we won't. Evaluate them on the criteria below.

5. The MDF and engineered-panel producers. A separate industrial tier from plywood, serving furniture and interior work at scale. Relevant if your BOM says "engineered panel" rather than "structural plywood" — a distinction worth checking before you request quotations, because it sends you to a different set of factories entirely.

What to check instead of a ranking

For wood, the documentation carries more risk than the product:

  • EUDR, for anything Europe-bound. The EU Deforestation Regulation asks for the geolocated plot the timber grew on plus a due-diligence statement — a heavier evidentiary burden than a certificate of origin, and one that is pulling orders toward compliant Vietnamese mills. See The Green Wall.
  • CARB Phase 2 / EPA TSCA Title VI, mandatory for composite wood into the US, plus Lacey Act declarations.
  • Live US trade-remedy scrutiny. Decorative and hardwood plywood from Vietnam sit under active investigation — an unresolved rate, not a settled one. With Vietnamese plywood at better than 18% of US plywood imports, the paperwork gets read. Our record timber year note covers the tension between scale and scrutiny.
  • FSC chain of custody, and E1/E0 formaldehyde class stated in writing.
  • Glue line and grade for the actual application — a film-faced formwork panel and an interior decorative panel are not interchangeable, whatever the price comparison suggests.

And because plywood's growth has drawn in intermediaries, run the standard verification before any deposit: how to verify a Vietnamese factory.

Sources & data notes

Vietnam's 2025 wood and wood-product exports (~$17.2 billion), plywood exports (over $1.8 billion in 2024), top-three-in-Asia plywood position, 9–12% annual plywood export growth, the Binh Duong / Bac Giang / Red River Delta clusters, and the US as the largest wood export market are drawn from 2024–2026 customs and industry reporting. Listed-company revenues — Phu Tai (PTB) ~VND 6,466bn 2024 (+15%), An Cuong (ACG) ~VND 3,762bn 2024 (from ~VND 4,475bn 2023), Duc Thanh (GDT) ~VND 365bn 2024 (+18%) — are from exchange and financial reporting. These listed groups span panels, furniture and finished wood products and are not pure-play plywood exporters; the plywood export base itself is fragmented and has no audited public ranking. Figures are indicative and subject to revision — verify current capacity, certification and trade-remedy status directly before relying on them. Inclusion is not an endorsement and does not indicate a commercial relationship with Make in Vietnam or VITD.
